Ionized-alkaline water? What’s all this about? Good lord. First we have to eat right, exerciseand do all sorts of things we would rather not in order to stay healthy, and now we have to drink some kind of special water? We’re already getting pure bottled water or filtering water from the tap. Isn’t all that good enough? When we look into it we find that alkaline water is ionized which means it possesses an abundance of negatively charged hydroxyl ions that have what is referred to as ORPor Oxidation Reduction Potential

My neighbor friend was all excited about something and telling me, “this is big. Kangen Water!” A little research shows us that Kangen is one of the many brand names in use for machines that produce ionized alkaline water through an electrolysis process, and Kangen is a Japanese term meaning “return to the origin.” As my friend went on about it there was something about some kind of special water he had found out about that is really good for your health because somebody discovered a way of making the water molecules smaller so they get into the body’s system better. My first thought and mental image was, “okay, so he saw someone standing on the back of one of those horse-drawn wagons, like in the cowboy days that was ranting and raving about some new cure-all snake oil potion, and he is completely taken in with this new thing, and is probably spending all his hard earned money on it.”

We all know that many of the water bottling companies get the water from the tap and just run it through a good carbon filter before putting it in the bottles, with millions of us buying cases of the filtered tap water in pretty plastic bottles (when we could so easily filter it ourselves), and millions of those pretty plastic bottles end up in the world’s oceans, as if the world’s oceans don’t already have enough problems. So what’s this guy so excited about? Is this special water the new thing of the future, or has he and a bunch of others been hoodwinked?

Another of my first thoughts was to forget it and realize that my friend had been taken in by somebody’s pipedream. Somebody was selling water to people who could get it for free or for very little from their faucets. Happens all the time. The idea probably came from one of those old guys who set up a camp near a water well out in the middle of nowhere in the old west, and sold water to people that happened by.
But it’s so easy to find out about things I couldn’t resist. I looked around a little and it seemed there was quite a lot of controversy on the Internet about ionized water that increased the alkaline properties of the water that makes it healthier for people to drink than non-ionized water. And it turned out that most the controversy was about a multilevel marketing program being used to distribute the water ionizing machines. The multilevel marketing people were using the word “scam” a lot to create controversy and attract attention. Other than that there didn’t seem to be anything that could really be classified as snake oil sales. The multilevel people were selling a machine for around $4,000.00 or more, with their competitors selling very similar machines at half and even some comparable machines available for as little as $600.

The rest of this story is in my book, Checklist For Staying Healthy, but so as to not make this too much of a teaser, and to make a long story short, my six month research on ionized drinking water determined that it's a good thing. I make no wild claims of dramatic weight loss, improvement in vision or any such things. But my months of research has clearly shown to me that there are benefits to drinking the ionized alkaline water. Specific results are shown in the improvement of my body's pH level (probable Hydrogen).

When starting out my pH level was in the acidic range of about 5.0 or so. After drinking the alkaline water from a machine I bought for 10 months or so, my pH level has improved to 6 to 7 on the scale. But keep in mind that while drinking the ionized alkaline water and using it in cooking, I was also sweating in a sauna at the gym and making improvements in my diet during the same period. In short I can definitely state that this water will not do you any harm, and could very likely do you a lot of good. It's healthy for people and healthy for the environment as well, since people throw way too many plastic bottles in the trash that end up in the oceans, and the oceans have enough already.

The worst thing I can say about Ionized Alkaline water is that there is no taste to it. A few years ago on a very hot day a fellow told me how good the water tasted that he was drinking from a bottle. I looked at him with a funny look, thinking that water has no taste, but it does, particularly water that is from a well or a spring. The filtering and electrolysis processes removes not only the Chlorine and other harmful junk, but it also removes the beneficial minerals. Therefore some of the machines come with a compartment for adding vitamins or minerals. I'm happy with putting a squirt or two of good lemon or lime juice into the processed water to add flavor, since I take plenty of vitamins and minerals on the side.

Of course, as with anything related to your health, you are well advised to also talk to your physician before starting to use the ionized alkaline water, or anything else for that matter that is a new thing for you.
