Staying Healthy

A Simple Guide

If you snooze you lose, or at least that's what we've been told, but is that always the case? Maybe not, at least it wasn't for Thomas Edison, that guy who invented the light bulb, phonograph, the first movie camera and so many other valuable things. Edison was known to sometimes crawl into a cubby whole and take a nap when something was perplexing him and he needed an answer. When he would wake up his problem was solved with the answer coming to him.

When it came to getting the first electrical power contract to transmit power from Niagara Falls Edison maybe should not have been napping, or at least if he took a nap it didn't give him the answer he needed, since he lost out to Nicola Tesla who claimed that alternating current would be better. Edison disagreed and claimed that alternating current wouldn't work.

Okay, so Edison missed that one but with the light bulb and so many other nifty inventions under his belt he probably didn't lose much sleep over it, and still had a pretty good trackrecord of profiting from his dreams.

You may have heard someone tell you that they do their best work when they are sleeping.  I don't know for sure but I'd be willing to bet that Edison had a notepad handy to quickly write down things about what happened during his naps, if he was not like a lot of us who so quickly forget what we were dreaming about.

What dreams are exactly we probably don't really know. Even though scientists are able to monitor dream activity with instruments, they are not yet able to actually interpret the precise meaning of dreams or record a person's dreams in full Technicolor, if they are able to record and play them back at all.  The recording of a dream and being able to play it back later, like we are able to do with a scene before us on our smart phones, may be something we will be able to look forward to at some time in the future.

We may have to rely on our notepad or a voice recording device of some kind for quite a while, until we are able to record our dreams and play them back at another time. But using the note pad or recorder on our cell phone may be well worth the effort in order to quickly record ideas of what we were dreaming about, with a much detail as possible, so we may use those ideas in our waking states.

In case you're thinking that I'm nuts and the only one who thinks about dreams, you may be surprised to know that a lot of scientists have investigated dreams, as told in the 51 munute video What Are Dreams by Nova on PBS.
