Staying Healthy

A Simple Guide

Many safety issues at the gym are mainly common sense, but things we may not think about. Wearing flip-flops in the workout area instead of heavier tennis shoes is an example. Serious injuries can result if wearing the flip-flops. And when we wear the flip-flops in the pool or sauna areas we should make sure their is plenty of tread on them to prevent slipping on the wet surfaces.

Not overdoing it on the weight machines is another good idea. Much better to work up gradually and not cause injuries. No point in trying to build the perfect body overnight. It's much better to do 50 sets of exercise at 25 pounds than 10 sets of exercise at 250 pounds, until you gradually work up to the larger weights.

Sweating in that dry-heat sauna is very good for the detox activity, but some common-sense safeguards should be used. If possible the buddy system is wise. Good to have someone with you incase one of you passes out from the heat. Most complete strangers are pretty nice but you never know.

It may not happen often but heatstroke is a possibility. Always stay well hydrated with plenty of water or juice. It's surprising how some people drink very little liquids, and when sweating that's definitely not the way to go. Another thing that can cause heatstroke is lack of salt. Our doctors tell us not to intake too much salt, but we do need a little more when sweating in a sauna. If you feel tired when sweating you're probably a little low on salt. If your sweat stings your eyes you probably have enough salt.

Sweating also has a tendency to deplete the good things in our bodies as well as getting rid of the toxins. A regular routine of taking vitamins and minerals keeps our bodies supplied with the necessary nutrients that we lose when we sweat a lot, as described in Checklist For Staying Healthy.

I lost my cell phone today at the gym, but didn't care too much, don't use it a lot.  They are very useful if you use them but I get sick of them to tell you the truth. Fortunately it was found at the gym by some kind person who turned it in to the front desk. Maybe I'll make a call with it some time. It's nice to know that someone was considerate enough to turn it in, and it would be nice if everyone were so caring. Actually most people are pretty good about such things, but there is the smaller percentage of those who are on the other side of the law and sometimes make things unpleasant for us.

We notice signs at the public gyms telling us not to store our valuables in the lockers, and it's for good reason. The lockers get broken into even in the nicer parts of town, which happens most in the early or late hours when fewer people are around. I never leave my belongings in the gym locker overnight, and I take as little as possible with me. I leave even my wallet home, which everyone can't do particularly if they drive and need to have their license with them. Since I'm within walking distance it's no problem for me. If I were to drive I would take only my license and the absolute necessities with me.

And I keep my keys with me at all times, never leaving them in the locker at any time. Can you imagine having your locker broken into and someone having your car keys and house keys? Kind of a creepy thought. And it does happen. You might feel funny carrying that five pounds of keys around with you in the gym, but better safe than sorry. We notice signs in the locker rooms once in a while that someone has posted on the wall, asking for information about the person who took their stuff early that morning.

If some of this sounds like paranoia it might be, but it looks to me that we live in a dangerous world, and it doesn't hurt to take some preventative measures. It also appears to me that preparing for the worst does not necessarily cause it to happen, and can cause it to not happen.

And if you haven't already taken measures to keep an eye on your home when you at the gym with no one home, this little goody might be something you will like. Security Cameras are everywhere these days. This item is not expensive and one of the best investments I've made recently. They run $75 to $100 per unit, have a very nice panoramic swivel view, and work on a wireless I.P. into your PC. If you have a large home you can put several of them in various places and monitor them all from the same Windows interface. Even if you don't have it on just the sight of it can deter a thief. But as we all know, if the thief wants to get in there is no stopping them, which is why it's very nice that you are able to record the video 24/7. And oh yes, it also has two-way audio so you can listen to and talk to the people at your door from your PC.
