It probably has to do a great deal with my being an engineer and being into checklists a lot. They're everywhere even though many of us may not think about them. The guys who pilot those fancy airplanes we fly on use quite extensive checklists before taking off. It only makes sense.
But the primary reason is that for many years I was really a bad shopper, and was very much in need of a list of some kind. Because I lived within walking distance of the grocery store it seemed that I didn't feel like I needed a list. So when I got to the store I would forget most the items I needed to get, and people working at the store wondered why I came in so often, thus the list was born.
If you are in your twenties or even thirties, the fact is you don't need a checklist of this kind if you are in good health, but you will eventually. Don't want to scare you but we all get there. And it's a pretty good bet that you know someone who is there, or getting their fast that could use stuff like this.
When I talk about this checklist I sometimes mention Thanksgiving, a time all of us like because of all the food, good times and an opportunity to be thankful for all the good things we have. And in my case I'm very thankful for always having been healthy, having a life where I've been fortunate enough to have been physically active for a good part of the time and reaped the benefits from that, as well as a number of other things.
But during the past few years I had one of those office jobs that don't do much for the exercise thing, and getting to what is referred to as middle-aged, I decided it was time to have a medical checkup and begin to be a little more responsible about my health. I worked in the healthcare industry, had the best insurance in the world, and felt a bit of a hypocrite not having a physical more often than I did.
And we got to love those doctors, don't we? They're just about the greatest people around. Sure, there's a quack here or there. We hear of some abuses here or there, but for the most part those doctors are our best friends. I personally don't like who's blowing smoke in their ears, namely the drug companies, but that's another story.
As wonderful as those doctors and hospitals are, the sad fact is that in the U.S., where medicine is a for-profit proposition, unless we are among the super rich, we really cannot afford the doctors and hospitals when we need them the most, even if we have the best insurance that's available. I had the best insurance there was and found myself paying through the nose for routine outpatient exams, after the insurance paid what it did.
In your twenties or thirties it's not so bad. But when a person gets middle-aged the doctors have a lot of data about the most serious conditions that affect people in those age groups, and the costs to even get checked for those things is quite expensive. If we get one of those dreaded things, forget about that house you own or your life savings, because the doctor and hospital is going to take every cent you have after your insurance pays, if you are fortunate enough to have the insurance.
It's just the simple plain cold math of it. As wonderful as they are, and as great as all that special equipment is they use, the hospitals are for profit companies in the U.S. So our best option is to remain as healthy as we possibly can in order to avoid the hospital stay.
I'm no doctor, just a regular guy like a lot of people, but I happen to have been fortunate enough to have enjoyed being healthy all my life, and much of it has had to do with things I've done particularly during the past 30 years regarding my health. No, I'm not in perfect health either, but I'm doing pretty dang good for my age. I don't make any wild miracle claims about my methods. They are all very common sense things that anyone can use without a lot of cost involved. The methods I have used are discussed in detail in Checklist For Staying Healthy, that includes a comprehensive checklist for people to use if they choose to do so.
And why am I doing this? Well it isn't for the money, for sure. No, I'm not among the super rich but I'm doing okay and actually do not need the money. It kind of goes back to that Thanksgiving thing and being thankful for the life I've had, and simply being quite happy and satisfied with the progress I've made, and willing to share what I have experienced with you and others.
